Dental Crowns

If your tooth is damaged, you can prevent its subsequent extraction or falling out by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Edward Perdue DDS. The dentist will start by examining and preparing the tooth in question. The next appointment involves placing the permanent dental crown in place. The dentist will need to take x-rays to analyze the roots of the tooth as well as the adjacent bone. If the x-rays reveal there is extensive decay or if the tooth pulp is at risk for infection or injury, it might be better to proceed with a root canal.

The placement of a dental crown requires the application of a local anesthetic to the tooth and even the adjacent gum tissue. The tooth receiving the crown is filed on each side to accommodate the crown. The level of tooth enamel removed hinges on the type of crown used. If a considerable amount of the tooth structure is lost as a result of trauma or decay, composite resin will help restore the structure of the tooth to ensure it has adequate support for the crown. Once the tooth is reshaped, the dentist will create impressions so the tooth that needs the crown can accommodate it just right. The dental impressions are sent to the dental lab so the crown can be made. The crown will have a shade similar to that of your current teeth so it blends in just right with your smile.
