Dental Sealants

Dental sealants help protect the grooves in the back of the teeth that are vulnerable to bacteria and germs. Such bacteria accumulates after consuming certain foods and beverages. Sealants prevent bacteria stemming from such diminutive particles from being stuck within the grooves of the molars. Though brushing the back teeth certainly helps, using a toothbrush alone is not sufficient for cleaning the grooves along the back teeth in the mouth. Dental sealants are thin coatings positioned along the molar biting surface to ensure decay does not occur. The dental sealant consists of a translucent or white resin liquid added to the molars with the use of a small brush. The liquid sealant bonds directly to the tooth. A blue LED light is then used to dry the liquid sealant.

The end result is a hard protective outer layer. In fact, the American Dental Association reports the addition of this protective layer decreases a child’s risk of cavities by a whopping 80%. Dental sealants are non-invasive. There is no need to use anesthesia or numbing agents prior to or during the application process as there is no drilling or accompanying pain. Once your child’s dental sealants are in place, you will rest easy knowing your little one has the essential protection necessary to avoid tooth decay in the molar teeth that are often neglected when flossing and brushing.
